AGC of Minnesota held its 95th Annual Meeting, “Bringing It Together,” on Jan. 15 at the Minneapolis Marriott in Minnetonka, Minn.

Attendees, speakers, planning committee members, sponsors, exhibitors and raffle item donors all played important roles.

Sen. Susan Kent was presented with the 2014 Legislator of the Year award. Sen. Kent was elected for the first time in 2012 and serves District 53, representing Woodbury and the surrounding area. She currently serves as vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. Senator Kent was the chief Senate author of the Work Zone Safety bill. This legislation made the first substantive changes to Minnesota’s work zone safety laws in almost 20 years. It changes the way work zone speed limits are set in construction zones and includes a clearly stated minimum fine of $300 for speeding in Minnesota construction work zones.

Rep. Ron Erhardt was recognized with the Award of Distinction for his many years of service not only to the state of Minnesota but specifically to the construction industry. Rep. Erhardt has served the Edina district as both a Republican and a Democrat. In the early 2000s, he began a quest to address Minnesota’s growing transportation funding deficiency by proposing politically unpopular tax increases. In 2008, his efforts paid off when he and five other Republicans joined House Democrats in overriding the governor’s veto of a bi-partisan funding package. The package provided $6.5 billion in new funding over 10 years to begin addressing the backlog of transportation needs. His actions were seen as a betrayal of the Republican party, he was denied endorsement for reelection, and subsequently lost his seat. In November 2014, he was elected as a Democrat and is now serving his 10th non-consecutive term.
