The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced that three additional highway construction projects financed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) have been awarded. Combined, the projects are worth $21.5 million and will save or create approximately 400 new jobs over the course of this work.

“We are working around the clock with the federal government to pump recovery funds into our economy quickly and effectively to save and create jobs, stimulate our economy and build better roadways right here in the Sacramento area,” said Caltrans District 3 Director Jody Jones. “These projects are three of the 71 projects that have been awarded across the state,” she added.

The projects include:

• The Resurfacing of state Highway 99 in Sutter County — This $17 million project will apply rubberized paving to 10 mi. (16 km) of Highway 99 from the Sacramento County line to state Highway 70, providing a smoother and safer road surface for the motoring public. The project is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in November. The prime contractor is George Reed Construction of Modesto, Calif.

• Installation of Traffic Data Systems — This $3.3 million project will incorporate changeable message signs and closed circuit TV cameras on four different freeways, providing motorists with valuable traffic information that will reduce their travel times. This project is scheduled to start in late August and is scheduled for completion in the fall 2010. The prime contractor is Peterson-Chase General Engineering Construction Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

• Installation of Traffic Monitoring Systems — This $1.2 million project will employ electronic detectors and sensors within the pavement which will provide real time traffic volume data thereby reducing travel times.

This project is underway and is scheduled for completion in December. The prime contractor is M & M Electric of Sacramento, Calif.

So far, 71 projects have been awarded with funding amounting to more than $470 million. The total projected value of those contracts totals more than one billion dollars.
