The Bomag BW120SL-5 tandem vibratory roller boasts high 4,320 vpm (72 Hz) vibration frequency, 7 percent higher than previous models in this class, to quickly complete asphalt compaction projects with high quality finish results. The roller's powerful drive motors and maintenance-free articulation joint deliver up to 40 percent gradeability and +/-10-degree oscillation for reliable performance when compacting soil and base material. Combined, these features make the versatile BW120SL-5 an all-around tandem vibratory roller for quickly completing new development construction, road repair, road construction finishing and landscaping projects, according to the manufacturer.

Offering 0.020-in (.05 cm) amplitude, the new BW120SL-5 roller generates 8,993-lb. (40 kN) centrifugal force to deeply penetrate asphalt and base materials. Operators can select either manual vibration or intelligent vibration control (IVC), designed to deliver optimum compaction results with minimal passes. Vibration can be imparted to both drums, front drum only or rear drum only to tailor vibration needs to jobsite conditions. The optional Bomag economizer for the BW120SL-5 takes the guess work out of compaction, eliminates over-compaction, and saves contractors time, money and fuel by measuring and displaying soil/asphalt stiffness via a simple-to-read LED light gauge on the dash.

The new roller's rugged bolt-on center articulation joint includes a maintenance-free design with no grease points for a reliable, low-cost operation, making it the right roller for rental yards. Its 25-hp (18.5 kW) Kubota diesel engine meets Tier IV Final emissions standards without requiring a diesel particulate filter (DPF), eliminating the need for and extra expense associated with filter regeneration. At the heart of this roller's easy-to-operate design, the operator's console features an ergonomic, easy-to-understand control layout, offering intuitive machine control for varying levels of operator experience.

Additional Features

Also new to this class of roller for Bomag, the BW120SL-5 boasts a pressurized water spray system for both drums. Two filters on the water system help keep water particles from entering the pressurized system, and the four spray nozzles feature a quick-disconnect design for fast and easy unplugging. The operator selects from five different timing intervals for water spray, extending operating intervals between refilling the 43.6-gal (165 L) water tank. The spray nozzles are shielded to ensure uniform drum coverage with water, even when operating in windy conditions. Two spring-loaded scrapers per drum clear the drum of debris in either travel direction and are tiltable for easy cleaning.

The roller's centrally located operator's station offers added visibility of the work site around the machine as well as to the drums' edges. Up to 2 in. (5 cm) of crab steering offset improves visibility to the front drum and simplifies compacting along edges and road finish work. The vibration-isolated operator's platform and suspended seat eliminate vibration feedback to the operator, increasing comfort and productivity, according to the manufacturer.

The new BW120SL-5 roller's low-maintenance design reduces time in the shop and increases production in the field. With no grease-daily points, the roller reduces daily maintenance time and costs. Its wide-opening rugged hood, made of impact-resistant compound material, offers unimpeded access to the engine and central electronics panel. Service technicians quickly maintain the water system, due to accessibility to the water pump, spray nozzles and central tank water drain. A centralized lifting point enables the roller to be quickly loaded and unloaded on a trailer, while a foldable ROPS structure reduces machine transport height.
