ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) A telecommunications company is scaling back its plan to build a new headquarters in downtown Rochester.

Officials at Fairport-based Paetec Holding Corp. said Feb. 2 that the company has dropped plans for a new nine-story building at Midtown Plaza. Instead, the company intends to combine new construction with an existing structure at the site, which is being redeveloped.

Company officials blamed the design change on the economic downturn and a reduction in the state’s incentive package for the project.

Paetec said it’s still committed to moving 1,000 jobs to the new downtown headquarters.

The new design is expected to be unveiled in March.

Paetec sells voice and data services mainly to small and medium-sized businesses around the nation.
