NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) A Vermont bridge closing for more than two years’ worth of construction will cause a bit of a headache for one community.
Newport, on Lake Memphremagog, is losing access to the Veterans Memorial Long Bridge, a major east-west truck route, in the spring.
An estimated $5.3 million is needed to construct the bridge.
City officials told The Caledonian-Record the new bridge is expected to last 75 to 80 years with proper deck maintenance. They had hoped that the existing 63-year-old bridge would only need a new deck, but more work was needed.
The Veterans Memorial Long Bridge is often used by larger trucks. It runs east-west and connects to Western Avenue and the Interstate 91 access road.
