Del. Schools May Not Receive $75M for Construction After All

DOVER, Del. (AP) State leaders may not follow through on a commitment to put up to $75 million from last year’s one-time windfall of unclaimed property to public school construction projects.

The school construction fund in the Delaware General Assembly’s Bond Bill includes $11.2 million for four Colonial School District projects at the top of the funding priority list.

But Office of Management and Budget Director Ann Visalli said the state’s fiscal crisis has changed that. Visalli told the legislative Joint Bond Bill Committee that before she signs off on any school construction projects, she’ll examine whether there are more pressing needs for that $75 million.

The most recent state revenue estimates anticipate a budget shortfall of $778 million for the year ahead.
