Granite Construction welcomed Dale Swanberg to the Granite team as vice president and deputy group manager of the large projects group, effective March 30. Swanberg succeeds Rob Pierce, who retired at the end of the month.

“I have known Dale as a fierce competitor and a loyal partner for years and have always respected his knowledge of the heavy civil construction industry and large projects in particular,” said Michael Donnino, senior vice president and large projects group manager.

Swanberg most recently served as chief operating officer of Flatiron Construction where his responsibilities included oversight of operations, engineering and estimating. Prior to Flatiron, Swanberg spent 27 years with The Walsh Group heavy civil division, including serving as vice president from 1994 to 2005 and president from 2005 to 2012. While president of the heavy civil division, the large projects group teamed with the Walsh Group on very successful projects such as the $290MM U.S.-90 Project in Mississippi and the $460MM Western Wake Freeway in North Carolina.

In addition, Swanberg has led the enterprise resource planning selection and implementation for Walsh’s corporate IT department, re-organized the equipment department and created and implemented a computerized asset management plan for equipment scheduling, acquisition and disposal. He also managed corporate incentive programs for senior managers and created the Walsh Group Leadership Initiative (WGLI), a program which identified potential future leaders, provided leadership training and exposure to senior management and stretch assignments.
