It’s always good to outgrow a facility, especially twice in a decade.
Ten years ago, Mack Boring & Parts opened in Wilmington, N.C. Four years later, the branch grew from 4,000 to 8,500 sq. ft. This spring, Mack Boring will build a 15,000 sq. ft. facility in addition to the existing building.
The expansion will allow Mack Boring to keep up with its growing industrial and power generation business.
“North Carolina is the center of our diesel generator assembly. We’ve outgrown our existing plant due to industrial demand. We need the second production center now,” said Ted McGovern, industrial division manager.
Mack Boring’s Wilmington facility is the southeast hub for design, production and distribution of Mitsubishi and Isuzu diesel engines. In addition, Mack Boring’s Global Power Products 8.1- to 135-hp (6 to 100 kW) open frame and enclosed diesel generator lineup is built in Wilmington.
“Expansion in a down market may be unusual for some companies, but our industrial business is developing rapidly and our marine business is very strong,” said Co-President Ned McGovern.
Wilmington supports Mack Boring’s Yanmar marine diesel engine business in the region as well, including dealers and a growing number of boatbuilders.
In addition to serving the recreational market with Yanmar, engineers at the Wilmington branch develop Yanmar applications for military pursuit boats and rigid inflatable crafts now deployed in Iraq.
The Union, N.J.-based company has two other branches in Wauconda, Ill., and Middleborough, Mass.
