Mack Trucks will be increasing employment by approximately 125 people at its Macungie assembly operations beginning the first week of October.
“At this point, it is anticipated that in addition to recalling folks currently on layoff, we will need to hire new employees as well,” said John Walsh, director of media relations, Mack Trucks.
This action will support a ramp-up in production.
“While the construction market remains very weak, we’ve recently experienced an uptick in order activity on the highway and refuse sides of our business. Beyond the economic and market forces at work, we’re also getting a very positive reaction to our new EPA 2010-compliant trucks. These trucks meet the most stringent environmental regulations in the world — and in addition to this, they also are offering our customers better fuel economy than pre-2010 models,” Walsh said.
Through July, Mack Trucks’s U.S. retail sales are up approximately 17 percent, including a 325-truck order from Chrysler Group Transport, which effectively will replace this new Mack customer’s entire fleet operating in the United States and Canada.
“Not every customer gives us permission to publicize their orders, but this one is indicative of the positive response we’re getting from a number of customers who are impressed with our newest products,” Walsh said.
The Macungie plant currently employs approximately 750 people, and the company employs a total of approximately 1,000 people in the Lehigh Valley. The latest increase in employment comes on the heels of the company’s recall of 75 people in June.
