GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) The South Carolina Department of Transportation said one bridge might be better than two along Interstate 85 in Cherokee County.

The DOT said it originally planned to spend about $7 million to replace the southbound I-85 bridge over train tracks that was built in the 1950s. But engineers then estimated it would only cost $4 million more to replace both bridges with a single span.

Officials say the single bridge would make it easier to widen the highway if the state decides to expand the interstate.

The DOT is taking public comments on its plans through March 14.
