The website lohud is reporting that some of the items seen floating down the Hudson River on Sunday were tarps from a construction barge, the Tappan Zee Bridge builder said Monday.

"On Sunday afternoon, several Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) work tarps on a TZC barge were blown into the Hudson River due to wind gusts nearing 20 mph," TZC spokeswoman Carla Julian said in a statement. "TZC crews responded immediately and safely retrieved the tarps."

Julian said there was additional debris, including wood and plastic, in the river near the project site as well but "that was not construction-related." Those items are believed to have come downriver following intense storms in the region over the weekend.

Grand View resident Thomas Wolzien spotted the debris early Sunday evening and alerted The Journal News.

"It was really strange," he said Sunday. "There were about 25 pieces — big chunks of something, I couldn’t tell what."

A Westchester County Police marine unit responded to the scene along with TZC crews to collect the objects, which were several feet long.

"It’s not unusual after a rainstorm for stuff to come floating down the river," police spokesman Kieran O’Leary said Monday.

In past years, storms and high winds have caused barges to break loose from the construction site and last November caused a project tugboat to sink.
