The Colorado newspaper The Tribune is reporting that an Evans, Colorado construction company will be building a maze similar to the one featured in the 1980 horror film “The Shining” at the same hotel that inspired the movie.

When Jesse Alfaro’s construction and landscaping company landed a job at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, he made his entire staff watch “The Shining.”

“I made my guys watch it just to make them see what they were getting into,” Alfaro said.

The Stanley Hotel celebrates the 1980 movie with ghost tours, paranormal investigations and by playing the film on repeat. This summer, the hotel will add another symbol from the movie — an outdoor hedge maze.

That’s where Alfaro and his team come in. Alfaro said he believes his company, One-Stop Construction and Landscapes, 3809 State St. in Evans, got the contract to build the maze because he was eager to commit his entire staff to the project and because they were willing to work quickly.

Last week, he brought 40 workers to begin installation of the maze, and he will repeat the process next Friday. The construction crew will have to handle unpredictable weather and the slew of tourists snapping pictures while they work, he said.

“The Shining” was inspired by a Stephen King novel. He conceived the idea for the book while staying at the Stanley Hotel. The film famously features a grand hotel and an imposing outdoor maze, though nothing like the maze ever existed at the Stanley.

Tina Harlow, director of communication for The Stanley Hotel, said the owner, John Cullen, decided to build the maze because he wanted to enhance the landscape in a way that complemented the historic nature of the building.

The hotel launched an international design competition last November and received 329 entries. A panel of judges chose a winner on Jan. 31 and soon after, the Evans company was selected to build it.

David Ciani, general manager of the Stanley Hotel, cautioned that the maze will not be as ominous as the one in the movie.

“It won’t be nearly the size as far as the height of the hedges,” Ciani said. “You have to be able to find your way out of there.”
