With a few signatures and a handshake in May it was official — Woodco Machinery Inc. of Woburn, Mass., became the authorized distributor for the Volvo Construction Equipment Road Machinery product lines.

The deal includes Volvo (Blaw-Knox) pavers and Volvo compaction and milling equipment, which were previously represented by Volvo Construction Equipment and Services (VCES) located in Southborough, Mass.

Volvo purchased the Ingersoll Rand assets, which make up its Road Machinery product line in 2007. Since that time, Woodco was hopeful it would acquire the lines and become a true full-line Volvo Construction Equipment distributor.

“Woodco and the Volvo products have been making good market penetration and continuous improvement with our support efforts. Volvo’s decision to integrate their Road Machinery with the construction line gives us more product to sell and increases our support opportunities, bringing additional scale to our operations,” said Paula Benard, a vice president of Woodco.

In addition to obtaining the Volvo Road Machinery product line, Woodco also obtained distribution contracts for the Mauldin Paving products line manufactured by Calder Brothers Corporation, as well as Carlson Pavers and Screeds, an Astec Company. In addition to these lines, Woodco will offer New Generation brand replacement parts.

“We have the synergy of working with most of the same customers as before, except now we are able to offer them a larger range of products, sort of like a ’one-stop shop,’” said Dana MacIver, Woodco’s CEO.

In addition to new product lines, Woodco also welcomes some veteran team members: Bill Perla, paving equipment sales; Bob Leach, paving product support; and Dave Hendrix, field service technician.

“It was key to the transition that we have the best people in place and were able to hit the ground running, customers in paving applications require exceptional product support — support, which we are confident we can provide,” added MacIver.

Both the parts and service departments have been working diligently to prepare for their expanded roles. “Basically, the acquisition turns Woodco Machinery into a 24/7 business because servicing pavers is usually done at night; henceforth, now there will be mechanics on call throughout the night,” said Kevin Sullivan, Woodco service manager.

Parts and equipment have been transferred from Southborough, stock orders have been made, and product training is complete. Parts Manager Steve Bodtmann is looking forward to the challenge the new product lines bring to his department.

“Service has always been Woodco Machinery’s number-one priority and we will continue to service the added Road Machinery products just like we have always done for our contractors. Customers will continue to get the same great customer service at Woodco Machinery that they received at VCES in Southborough,” MacIver said.

VCES in Southborough will remain the authorized dealer of Ingersoll Rand portable hand-held tools, Doosan Portable Power air compressors, generators and light towers and Skyjack rough terrain telescopic forklifts.
