Several stations along Philadelphia’s Elevated Market-Frankford Rail Line are in major disrepair. But Tony DePaul & Son, Blue Bell, PA, has come to the rescue. The construction company has been selected to be the general contractors for the rehabilitation of the Berks, Huntingdon and Church Street stations along the northern corridor of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) elevated rail system route. This project is one of several that are part of the SEPTA’s “Blueline Structure” program, which involves the rehabilitation of the entire Market-Frankford transit system.

“The cost of the project is estimated at $30.2 million and consists of demolishing the old stations and building new structures. This will be accomplished while still maintaining service,” said Jim Quinn, project manager. “The duration of the project will be three years. By that time, communities will have access to clean, safe and modern ADA- compliant transit stations.”

Specifically, the project consists of new stair towers that will be reinforced concrete structures clad with glazed masonry units and porcelain panels and also include new windows and doors. A new reinforced concrete platform including a tactile warning edge will be installed. The existing canopy posts and eave struts will be refurbished and reinstalled. The new canopy roof will be prefinished metal. In addition, according to Quinn, the station buildings will have standard built-up roofing. Stainless steel windscreens have been designed for the new platform areas.

“There will be two overpasses built at each station,” stated Quinn. “ADA-compliant elevators will be provided at each station as well as new signage, benches and trash receptacles. New curbs and sidewalks will be constructed at the completion of the project.”

The electrical has been contracted to Nucero Electrical Construction and the mechanical contractor is the Len Parker Company.
