When an article appears in the trade press, it is a golden opportunity for the featured construction contractor.

When the article appears in the trade press, it is a golden opportunity for the featured construction contractor.

If you're lucky enough to get a request by someone to write a story about your company or a project your company is involved in, for cripes sake DO IT! No question…no hesitation…jump on it!

I work with a number of heavy equipment manufacturers and construction technology firms who will commission me to write a story about a customer-contractor using their equipment on a project. My objectively-written stories focus on the project, the contractor and how the equipment helped the contractor get the work done. The articles are not puff pieces, but they reflect positively on the contractor and the work being done.

When the article appears in the trade press (e.g., Construction Equipment Guide), it is a golden opportunity for the featured construction contractor. The contractor can email a link (or mail a photocopy) to:

1. All current and past customers.

2. Prospective customers.

3. Local business associates in the community.

4. Community leaders and elected officials.

5. The bank where you do business, have loans, and/or line of credit.

6. Membership roster of every business, community, and/or social organization you

have membership in.

7. Alumni director of every high school and college attended.

With all of the above include a note that says, “Thought you'd be interested in seeing media coverage of a recent project we are proud to have been involved in.”

Don't forget to post the article on your personal and business Facebook pages, LinkedIn, and any other social media forums you partake in.

The idea is to push the article out to larger audiences than the circulation of the publication where it appears. The coverage received in the publication and your additional push functions as easy marketing for you and helps position your company as a leader.

As my dear ol' Mom once said: “Jeffy when you do something good or accomplish something it's my God-given right to brag.” So, go ahead and let your Mom brag about any articles that are published, but you need to do a little bragging to the audiences she doesn't reach.
