Bomag’s BT60/4 and BT65/4 tampers offer the operating convenience of a four-cycle engine while maintaining the high stroke and impact force of a two-cycle model. In addition, the tampers can be transported in a horizontal position without concern for oil contamination of the cylinder, muffler, carburetor or air filter, according to the manufacturer.

The BT60/4 weighs 137 lbs. (62 kg) and delivers up to 3,035 lbs. of impact force with a maximum compaction depth of 22 in. (56 cm). The BT65/4 weighs 150 lbs. (68 kg) and delivers up to 3,642 lbs. of impact force with a maximum compaction depth of 26 in. (66 cm). The maximum travel speed of both models is 66 ft. (20 m) per minute, and they produce 600 to 708 impacts per minute.

The tampers feature a newly redesigned engine protection cover for enhanced durability. They also come with a dual air and fuel filter system for enhanced performance and reliability.

A low oil alert system reduces maintenance concerns and enhances equipment reliability by preventing the tamper from operating with an inadequate lubrication level. A float gauge in the engine crankcase essentially checks the oil supply when the operator attempts to start the engine. When the oil level is low, the gauge activates an electronic warning device that stops the engine from starting, thus preventing unnecessary wear on the machine.

Combining a well-balanced design with a well-protected, integrated air intake and a low center of gravity, the BT60/4 and BT65/4 require little effort to guide. The tamping foot is constructed of high-strength honeycomb polyethylene that absorbs shock, ensures stability and provides smooth operation, according to the manufacturer.

For operator safety and comfort, the four-cycle tampers offer anti-vibration handles. The handles minimize the amount of vibration transferred to the operator and increase the number of hours an operator can safely use the tamper.

The BT60/4 and BT65/4 are designed for compaction of cohesive, semi-cohesive and granular soils. Typical applications include highway patching, compaction of backfill around foundations and footings, reinstatement in trenching applications and utility and cable backfill applications. Because of the lower noise and emissions produced by the four-cycle engines, the units are ideally suited for residential areas and confined trench work.

The tampers have a standard operating width of 11 in. (28 cm). Four interchangeable shoe sizes (6, 9, 11 and 13 in. [15, 23, 28 and 33 cm]) are available as optional equipment. Additionally, optional tamper shoe extensions with 4- and 6-in. (10 and 15 cm) working widths are available. Ideal for utility applications, such as laying cable and installing underground sprinkler systems, the 15-in. (38 cm) long extensions use the same bolt pattern as factory installed shoes for simple field replacement.
