On Aug. 23, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) celebrated the completion of the first stage of construction on the Sand Creek Road Interchange project.

This major project milestone is the first of three significant traffic reconfigurations that will minimize the traffic impacts at the Highway 4 and Sand Creek Road intersection, and bring much needed congestion relief to east Contra Costa County.

A traffic switch the following weekend moved eastbound drivers onto the newly completed stretch of Highway 4 near the Sand Creek Road Interchange. This traffic movement opened the new Sand Creek bridge for eastbound Highway 4 traffic, and reduced traffic congestion for eastbound Highway 4 traffic between Lone Tree Way and Balfour Road.

Bob Taylor, mayor of Brentwood, said, “these improvements along Highway 4 in Brentwood mark an important milestone in the effort to improve transportation and quality of life in our region of Contra Costa County. Brentwood is growing, and the transportation system will grow with it.”

CCTA Executive Director Randy Iwasaki said, “The Highway 4 corridor projects — including the improvements between Lone Creek Way and Sand Creek Road — are part of CCTA’s partnership with the public to deliver transportation solutions, such as more efficient freeways and eBART, which contribute to the quality of life for the more than 250,000 residents of eastern Contra Costa County.”

CCTA secured funding in 2011 through the state Corridor Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA) to widen Highway 4 and construct a partial interchange at Sand Creek Road. With this project currently ahead of schedule and under budget, CCTA was able to combine project savings with additional funding from local sources to complete the entire interchange at Sand Creek Road and extend the four lane widening to south of Sand Creek Road.

The entire Sand Creek Road Interchange and 4-Lane Widening project is expected to be complete in late 2014 and includes expanding the highway from two to four lanes (two in each direction) from Lone Tree Way to Sand Creek Road, the construction of the Sand Creek Road Interchange, and the provision of a median wide enough to accommodate mass transit in the future (eBART).
