Demo ride? Sure, take it out for a spin. How about Shady Grove, PA to Orlando, FL and back with a few stops along the 2,400 mile route. That’s just what Grove did to introduce its TMS700E Series mobile hydraulic truck mounted crane. Parts of the crane had already been through extensive testing, but it’s a truck crane and truck cranes travel on the road, so the company thought it would give it a good run. Initially planned as a trip to a relatively close distributor, a Grove product specialist admitted “The Road Trip sort of took on a life of its own.”

The trip ventured from Baltimore, MD to Richmond, VA; Raleigh, NC; Columbia, SC; Jacksonville, FL, Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Roanoke, VA; and back to Shady Grove, PA. Stops at distributors at the various cities allowed truck crane users an opportunity to see the latest new truck crane from Grove up close. The TMS700E Series includes the TMS750E with a 50 ton (45 t) capacity and the TMS760E model with a 60 ton (55 t) capacity. The main boom is Grove’s Megaform design which provides enhanced rigidity with low weight. The 4 section, full power boom extends from 35 to 110 ft. (10.9 to 33.5 m) and includes a folding lattice swingaway extension with lengths of 33 and 56 ft. (10.1 and 17.1 m). The folding extension offsets at zero degrees, 25 degrees or 45 degrees and reaches a maximum tip height of 172.5 ft. (52.6 m). An optional 33 ft. (10.1 m) fixed-length swingaway is available with offsets at zero degrees, 25 degrees and 45 degrees. An optional 20 ft. (6.1 m) lattice insert is also available with a maximum tip height of 192 ft. (58.5 m).

The TMS700E Series carrier is based on a chassis design from other Grove truck cranes, but with one very important new feature, front and rear air ride suspension. Powered by a Cummins 400 hp (298.1 kW) diesel, the unit travels at speeds up to 55 mph (88.5 kph). The counterweight is hydraulically installed and can be removed in minutes. Three 5,500 lb. (2,494.7 kg) counterweights provide up to 16,500 lbs. (7,484.2 kg) max counterweight.

According to the company, it received excellent feedback at every stop and Grove personnel accompanying the unit on the trip encountered no problems at all.
