On March 5, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) — National awarded Helix Electric with two prestigious Excellence in Construction Eagle Awards and two Pyramid Awards at a ceremony recognizing the year’s most innovative and high-quality construction projects.

The Port of Long Beach Pier J Ship to Shore Retrofit and La Jolla Commons Phase II projects both received Eagle awards, the highest recognition given by the ABC. Among the honorees for the Pyramid Awards were Helix’s projects at the Downtown Container Park in Las Vegas Nevada and Sales @ Congress at the Venetian Casino and Resort. A representative of the ABC offered the following comment on the Helix Electric Facebook page, “Such great projects — we are proud to award you for your hard work!”

About the Port of

Long Beach Pier J Ship to Shore Retrofit Project

The Port of Long Beach Pier J Ship to Shore Retrofit Project was convened after the passage of Prop 1B which aimed to reduce emissions at California ports. While at berth, ships at the Port of Long Beach were required to run their diesel engines to sustain ship operations. Helix Electric acted as the prime contractor to install shore power at the port, cutting air pollution at berth by 95 percent.

The Helix team overcame the challenge of completing installation on the water at the fully operational pier through innovative techniques, resulting in a finished project 165 days ahead of schedule. The Port of Long Beach Pier J Ship to Shore Retrofit project also was awarded the Golden Gate Partnership Recognition, Cal/OSHA Consultation Service’s highest recognition for exemplary site safety.

About the La Jolla Commons Phase II Project

La Jolla Commons Phase II is a 13-story, 415,575 sq. ft. (38,608 sq m) office tower and currently the largest carbon neutral office building in the country.

According to the project developer, Hines, the building achieves carbon neutrality through a combination of high-performance building design, directed biogas, and onsite fuel cells that annually generate more electricity than the building and tenant uses. The fuel cells, powered from biogas pumped in from cow farms, landfills, and other sources, will produce 4.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. The building is expected to require no more than 2.9 million kilowatt hours of use, which results in a net of 1.4 million kilowatts of electricity, annually.

The excess will be distributed to San Diego Gas & Electric and then returned to the surrounding community. Along with the compete electrical infrastructure to support the innovative sustainable building design, Helix Electric installed approximately 6,000 LEDs, estimated to save $38,000 per year in energy costs.

About the Downtown Container Park Project

The Downtown Container Park is a 19,000 sq. ft. project utilizing shipping containers reimagined into beautiful, distinctive recreation spaces, restaurants, and shops in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. At the center of the development is a playground with a shipping container converted into a treehouse, a water area and an interactive play zone for children. The site also features an outdoor music amphitheater.

The Downtown Container Park realizes the city’s vision of offering a unique outdoor experience and family-friendly environment. Helix played an integral part in the execution of the innovative conceptual design and unique construction process to create a one-of-a-kind park for all to enjoy.

About the Sales @ Congress WIP Phase III Project

Located at the Venetian Casino and Resort, the Sales @ Congress project involved an office expansion achieved through the addition of a mezzanine level between two existing floors. The Helix team met the considerable challenge of performing complex construction tasks without impacting the fully-booked convention center schedule. This successful project transformed a space, once filled with cable tray and ductwork, into a 15,000 sq. ft. (1,393.5 sq m) office space area that combines private offices, open office space, conference rooms and break areas into a flexible work environment.

According to the ABC, the Excellence in Construction Awards is the “premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the nation.” The awards program honors the highest quality and the most innovative construction projects as well as diversity and safety programs. This year marked the organization’s 25th year of awarding the Excellence in Construction distinction. Helix Electric also was awarded an Eagle and Pyramid in 2013 for projects at the Sands Expo & Convention Center and the San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 West Expansion, respectively.
