As part of ongoing efforts to help eastern Kentucky rebuild after devastating floods hit the region two years ago, Gov. Andy Beshear recently held a press briefing to discuss ongoing community "high-ground" rebuild projects that involve the construction of new homes and surface transportation infrastructure.

The governor also joined local officials to present more than $11 million in funding to benefit the hard-hit counties of Letcher and Knott, which will go toward improving water and sewer infrastructure repairs; modifying Jenkins City Hall; developing a recreational trail system; and patching roadways.

The "high-ground" communities being built with that funding are designed with "resilience in mind" said Beshear in a statement, allowing survivors to "begin rebuilding their lives in an area that's safe and secure from future flooding disasters."

As part of those efforts, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet — along with the local governments — is helping oversee the construction of roads in the affected areas so contractors and eventually residents can access the new home sites.

"Team Kentucky is building pathways to a promising future for eastern Kentuckians impacted by the floods," the governor said. "These road projects will help contractors access the construction site and get residents one step closer to rebuilding their homes and lives."

Work to build roads and bring utilities to the home-building site is expected to start this summer.
