“Little pine tree” — that’s what one of the world’s largest heavy equipment manufacturer means in English. Of course, contractors across the world know the company’s name as “Komatsu,” which gets its name from a Japanese city.

Takeuchi Mining Industry founded Komatsu Iron Works as a subsidiary to make industrial tools for the parent company. When Komatsu grew large enough to sell to the public, it was spun off on May 13, 1921, as Komatsu Ltd. In 1931, the company manufactured its first agricultural tractor prototype. Through the 1930s, Komatsu also produced military tractors for the Japanese military, as well as bulldozers, tanks and howitzers. Today, Komatsu is the second largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment.
