Kuhn Equipment Spreads Wings With New Facility

In the past year since Kuhn Equipment Sales Company Inc., based in Summerville, SC, relocated to its new facility, it has lowered costs by keeping things simple: performing service work itself, at one location. Previously, the company, founded in 1974, was based out of an office with no service or storage facilities.

The new location not only provides room for service work, but also ample storage for equipment and inventory. “We are now able to do our own service work on the equipment we buy and sell and are able to take care of our own rental units,” explained owner Dallas Kuhn.

The company does not provide much outside service work for customers, “except,” Kuhn noted, “for those select customers who request it. We have three excellent service techs and they do a good job on any kind of machine.”

The main strategy of Kuhn Equipment is to sell machines that have been acquired worldwide at a good value to its customers. The company repairs these acquisitions as necessary to get them prepped for sale or job-ready condition.

“We want to be able to tell a potential customer that the machine they want has been through our shop and checked out okay,” Kuhn said.

The facility sits on 3.5 acres (1.4 ha), covers 5,000 sq. ft. with more than 400 ft. (122 m) of highway frontage, and boasts four indoor service bays as well as two outdoor bays with overhang. Located approximately 25 mi. outside of Charleston and 25 mi. from the I-95/I-26 interchange, the business is easily seen from I-26, a fact that has provided new customers for the company.

Primarily a new and used equipment dealer, Kuhn Equipment sells Genesis products and A-WARD demolition and material handling attachments. The company was awarded the Dynapac distributorship in early 2002, providing compaction and paving equipment for rental and sale.

Bobby Elkin, who has been selling equipment in the Charleston area for more than 30 years, handles the Dynapac line in the company’s Low Country territory.

Kuhn noted that although the Dynapac distributorship is limited to the local area, Kuhn Equipment supplies machinery to customers all over the world.
