You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t heard the slogan “Nothing runs like a Deere” at one time or another. And the iconic corporate logo of a leaping deer has been a symbol of quality associated with the John Deere name for more than 135 years. In fact, the unmatched quality that is part of every piece of John Deere construction equipment and other industrial, residential and agricultural products even pre-dates the Civil War.

An American Institution Dating Back to 1837

In U.S. history terms, 60 years ago isn’t that long ago. Interestingly, Deere & Company essentially had its roots approximately 60 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed.

John Deere was born in Rutland, Vermont, in 1804. By 1837, after moving to GrandDetour, Illinois, to evade bankruptcy in his birth state, Deere opened a blacksmith shop, and in essence, a truly iconic American company was born.

John Deere died in 1886, and the presidency of Deere & Company passed to Charles Deere. By now the company was manufacturing a variety of farm equipment products in addition to plows, including wagons, corn planters, cultivators.

Core Values That Have Stood the Test of Time

Today, Deere & Company employs approximately 47,000 people in 27 countries worldwide. The company is still dedicated to executing the same core values that John Deere first instituted so many years ago: integrity, quality, commitment and innovation. Looking forward, the company plans to expand its reach in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Russia, India and China by continuing to provide effective equipment solutions that help businesses in these growing areas continue to prosper.
