Construction Equipment Guide

The John Deere manufacturing facility in Greer, SC, needed to install a monitoring system that would retrieve old chemicals from the ground under the area where engine components were being manufactured. The job required a 360 ft. (109.7 m) long, 6.5-in. (16.5 cm) diameter bore at a depth of 10 ft. (3 m) under the plant’s cement floor.

Environmental Services of Georgia was the utility contractor responsible for completing the project. The bore was performed by a Ditch Witch Model 2717 directional drill. The bore was tracked using a Spot D Tek IV directional tracking & locating system produced by McLaughlin Mfg. Co., Greenville, SC. A McLaughlin 9.5HKz low interference directional probe was mounted to the drill head, and a McLaughlin Mole Map IV remote monitor mounted to the directional drill enabled the operator to view the boring operation in real time for the complete length of the bore beneath the concrete floor of the John Deere plant.

The Spot D Tek IV receiver and Mole Map IV remote monitor simultaneously displayed the bore-in -progress; pitch, roll, depth of the drill head even when rotating drill rod, probe temperature and battery life. Left-right remote guidance and “yaw” target steering (to reduce oversteering) ensured accurate control on target in only three hours.
