Construction Equipment Guide

Multiquip’s line of WhisperWatt 150 to 400 generators will have advanced Tier 4i engines with selected model availabilities beginning in September 2011.

The portable power generators are fueled by advanced diesel engines that meet the more stringent 2011 Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4i standards while providing profitable performance and reliability.

“These advanced engines include diesel particulate filters, as well as a cooled ERG and air-to-air after cooling,” stated Torsten Erbel, vice president product management, engineering and customer support of Multiquip. “To make these WhisperWatt generators even more compliant, they are also variable geometric turbo-charged.”

The EPA has adopted a comprehensive national program to reduce emissions from future non-road diesel engines by integrating engine and fuel controls as a system to gain the greatest emission reductions. To meet these emission standards, engine manufacturers are producing new engines with advanced emission-control technologies similar to those already under development for highway trucks and buses. Exhaust emissions from these engines will decrease by more than 90 percent compared to current diesel engines.

Because the emission-control devices can be damaged by sulfur, the EPA has adopted a limit to decrease the allowable level of sulfur in non-road diesel fuel by more than 99 percent.

These reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions from non-road diesel engines will provide enormous public health benefits. The EPA estimates that by 2030, controlling these emissions would annually prevent 12,000 premature deaths, 8,900 hospitalizations, and one million work days lost, according to Multiquip.
