National Crane Looks Into Future With Telescoping Crane

National Crane Corporation, a Grove Worldwide Company, has introduced the series 1800, its largest telescoping crane yet.

In both reach and capacity, the series 1800 (model 18142) is among the truck-mounted crane industry’s largest. It is rated with a maximum capacity of 40 tons (36.29 t). With a 142-ft. (43.28 m) five-section hydraulic boom and optional 26-ft. (7.92 m) manual jib, the 1800 has a maximum vertical reach of 168 ft. (51.21 m) and maximum hydraulic reach of 149 ft. (45.42 m). Two cross-frame hydraulic outriggers, each spanning 24 ft. 8 in. (7.52 m), and a single front stabilizer, provide firm support. The crane mounts on a standard commercial tandem rear axle truck equipped with either a pusher or a tag axle, and can be equipped with a variety of accessories, including personnel baskets, to accommodate up to four people.

The lifting capacity of the 1800 is made possible through the use of a swinging counterweight, engineered specifically for this new model.

National Crane pioneered the synchronous boom extension system that efficiently distributes boom weight and maximizes reach by telescoping proportionally, as well as the Easy Glide boom wear pads and specially-formulated polymer paint that combine to provide smooth boom performance with minimal lubrication. A load-sensing, pressure-compensated hydraulic system offers control with minimal horsepower requirements. A planetary gear drive winch with roller bearings increases efficiency, requires less horsepower and generates less heat. The 1800’s quick-reeve boom tip with three lower sheaves and new quick-reeve one sheave block allow reeving of from one to three parts of line, simply by pulling four pins.

The series 1800 is equipped with a fully enclosed operator’s cab for comfort and efficiency. The aluminized steel cab has safety glass on all sides and in the roof for maximum visibility, and the front and top are equipped with self-parking wipers/washers. Each of the “all-position” seat’s armrests house either two single-axis controllers or one dual-axis joystick. Floor-mounted engine throttle control and swing brake pedals are standard; a telescope pedal is optional. A control console contains winch, hydraulics, truck engine and load moment indicator lights, as well as heater controls and a manual locking truck engine throttle. Fan-equipped, the 1800’s cab door and all but the front window slide open for ventilation. A propane heater is ducted to the floor and windows, a fan is standard and air conditioning is optional.

Load Moment Indicator (LMI) and Anti-Two-Block (ATB) systems are standard on the series 1800. The PAT Model DS 150 LMI provides the operator with a continuous reading of available capacity during a lift. When the load capacity is approached, a caution light illuminates on the LMI console; when full capacity is reached, an audio/visual alarm warns the operator to take corrective action and the LMI deactivates functions that could contribute to an overload. The system automatically adjusts when the overload is relieved, allowing the resumed use of all crane functions. An ATB system helps prevent cable damage by sensing the position of the winch cable and attachments with respect to the jib sheave case. The ATB shuts down functions that can cause two-blocking when the winch cable attachments contact the underside of the boom or sheave case, whether by winching-up or by extending the boom without paying-out cable.
