We’ve all read humorous references to man caves, but real ManCaves are currently under construction in Englewood, Colo.
And no, ManCaves isn’t a typographical error; the joining of the two words goes along with the brand owner ManCaves’s registered trademark.
“The idea came from the founders of ManCaves trying to solve their vehicle storage needs. As experienced luxury condominium builders, when they couldn’t find the right spaces to buy, they decided to build their own. If these three guys were all in need of storage, especially for their hobbies, then surely many others were as well. They developed the project based around properly sized and amenitized units that would offer what no other storage unit or large home garage could, a community,” said ManCaves’s co-founder Matt Mullin, who, together with Jack Koson and Terry Staples, came up with the original concept.
ManCaves customizes each unit to fit the requirements of the purchaser, which, said Mullin, includes “Everything and anything you can dream of. From a hot air ballooning sanctuary with brick walls and custom ceilings, to simple bathrooms, buyers are doing everything they want.”
The 63,000 sq. ft. complex hosts 64 units in four buildings. With a minimum headroom of 18 ft. (5.5 m) and a 14 ft. (4.3 m) high door, the insulated units range in size from 400 to more than 1,400 sq. ft. The basic design offers individually metered 125 amp panels and a 50 amp boat or RV outlet, along with hot and cold water. Customizations available include enhanced lighting, a loft, cabinets, or even a car lift.
Denver general contractor RJM Construction is building the complex, the formal groundbreaking for which took place in early June.
“Site work began in May, and the project will be complete by December 2014,” said RJM Senior Project Manager Sam Schupbach. Tasks currently under way include over-excavation, recompaction, footing, and grade beam excavating, he added.
Perkins Excavating LLC of Parker, Colo., is handling its part of the project utilizing a John Deere 644J loader and a 410G backhoe with shaker head, both from Deere, and one each of Caterpillar’s 322B excavator, 621F scraper and D8N dozer. Larimer Construction, based in Denver, is performing concrete work and fielded a JCB 507-42 all-terrain forklift for moving rebar into place and for moving its forms.
Denver’s Total Plumbing, Inc., and Tower Electric Inc., of Littleton, Colo., also are working on the job, for which Studio K2 Architecture provided architectural services.
The complex also features a club house. As ManCaves’s Mullin observed, “ManCaves are all about community, and creating a club-like atmosphere is part of that. The club serves some basic needs like bathrooms as well, but is intended to be the hub of activity for owners at ManCaves.”
