CASE Introduces Tier 4 Final 821F and 921F Wheel Loaders at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014

The SCR-only approach continues to deliver significant fuel savings, unrestricted horsepower and simplified maintenance.

CASE Construction Equipment has announced that the company’s 821F and 921F wheel loaders meet federal Tier 4 Final emissions standards. As with the Tier 4 Interim models, CASE has equipped each model with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-only solution that treats emissions separately with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and does not require the engine to re-circulate exhaust gas. This optimizes combustion and machine performance, lowers engine temperatures, and eliminates maintenance and downtime associated with filter replacement and regeneration, according to the company. It also helps lower fuel consumption. This is all accomplished with i throttle response, unrestricted horsepower and powerful breakout force for improved profitability and optimal productivity in wheel loader applications.

“CASE was the first to implement SCR into our Tier 4 Interim machines because that solution makes the most sense for wheel loaders based on the inconsistent engine loads placed on the machine throughout its regular work cycle,” says Philippe Bisson, brand marketing manager, CASE Construction Equipment. “It also prepared everyone, from our dealer network to our customers, for the technology change ahead of other manufacturers, placing them in the best position to succeed as the Tier 4 Final regulations come into effect.”

Each new Tier 4 Final wheel loader delivers best-in-class horsepower with a 6.7-liter Tier 4 Final-certified engine that also provides quick throttle response and impressive torque. The 821F and 921F wheel loaders produce 212 and 241 net peak horsepower (158 and 180 kW), respectively. The 821F features a range of buckets from 3.2 to 4.5 cubic yards (2.4 to 3.4 cubic meters); and the 921F features a bucket range from 3.8 to 4.75 cubic yards (2.3 to 3.6 cubic meters).

More power, minimal fuel consumption and maximum uptime

While the new 821F and 921F wheel loaders meet Tier 4 Final requirements and set the standard for horsepower performance within each size class, they also offer the same fuel-saving advantages of the Tier 4 Interim models. Each machine provides up to 10 percent increase in fuel economy over the previous E Series models. Additional fuel savings of up to 30 percent can be achieved with a standard engine shutdown feature found on each model that allows the operator to limit engine idle time. An optional efficiency package provides additional fuel savings with features such as a five-speed lockup transmission, axles with auto-locking differential and advanced system programming.

The Case for SCR

With SCR, these Tier 4 Final wheel loaders achieve lower temperatures in the engine exhaust system while optimizing combustion to achieve greater fuel economy and peak horsepower. This is particularly helpful in waste and agricultural applications where engine temperatures are closely monitored (additional guarding/cooling packages are also available on the 721F for specialized applications). The SCR-only approach on the new 821F and 921F wheel loaders also contributes to machine uptime. It eliminates the need for manual diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration and the associated downtime that can occur with wheel loaders that use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) technology to meet emission standards.

As an after-treatment system with minimal components there is also no need for recirculation equipment or a diesel particulate filter for lower long-term maintenance costs. Additionally, SCR results in extended time between service intervals as lower ambient temperatures result in slower degradation of lubricating oil.

Engineered for optimal productivity

As with previous models, the 821F and 921F wheel loaders incorporate the use of powerful and quick hydraulics in addition to a host of features that further enhance machine efficiency and productivity. Among them are:

• Four programmable power modes that allow users to match the machine output to available engine power.

• Heavy-duty axles with auto-locking front and open rear differentials for optimal traction in virtually all conditions, including non-compacted surfaces such as gravel. The axle design also helps reduce tire wear, especially on hard surfaces. Solid tires are also available as an option for work in applications such as waste transfer stations.

• An optional five-speed transmission with lock-up torque converter for even faster road travel speed, acceleration and shorter cycle times. The transmission includes the CASE Power Inch feature that lets operators approach targets quickly and precisely regardless of engine speed. It also ensures there is no roll back even on steep slopes, making it easier and quicker to dump into a truck. The standard four-speed transmission with manual kick-down capability provides maximum traction and increased bucket penetration.

To provide operator comfort and help boost productivity, the 821F and 921F wheel loaders feature a cab with full climate control, as well as an award-winning joystick steering option, and an available two-level hydraulic control system. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide excellent visibility to the edge of the bucket or tip of the fork. All service points are easily grouped and located throughout the machine for easy access.

For even greater versatility and efficiency, the 821F is available in an XT (tool carrier) configuration, while both the 821F and 921F models are available in XR (extended reach) configurations.
