MarkWest Energy Partners L.P. has ordered more than 70 Cat G3600 engines, Caterpillar Oil & Gas’s flagship series for gas compression applications. A combination of G3608 engines rated at 2,370 hp and G3612 engines rated at 3,550 hp will be used to support natural gas gathering operations across the Utica Shale and Marcellus Shale formations. Initial shipments of the gas compression package systems are scheduled to begin in early 2014 with deliveries scheduled throughout the year. AG Equipment, based in Broken Arrow, Okla., has been awarded a contract for initial packaging of this equipment. AG Equipment along with Cat dealer Warren CAT led Caterpillar’s efforts on the sale. Cat dealers Cleveland Brothers and Ohio CAT are coordinating after sale support services.

"This order is a significant achievement for Caterpillar in the gas compression industry," Dave Dunlevy, Caterpillar Oil & Gas general manager stated. "It is one of our largest orders of G3600s for gas compression and we are appreciative of MarkWest for their continued support of our industry-leading power solutions and unparalleled service provided by the Cat dealer network."

"We are pleased to work with Caterpillar Oil & Gas to expand our gathering and compression footprint in the northeast," stated Frank Semple, chairman, president and chief executive officer at MarkWest. "The installment of quality Caterpillar technology will be critical to support the continued development of producers’ rich-gas acreage in the heart of two of America’s most prolific shale plays."

Manufactured in Lafayette, Ind., Cat G3600 engines for gas compression have logged 140 million operating hours around the world. Built using the Cat diesel platform, the gas-fueled G3600 units stand up to demanding natural gas applications, delivering 1,775 to 4,735 hp, with virtually no unscheduled downtime. In addition to the proven power ratings, the G3600 engine’s efficiency and technology result in longer overhaul intervals and reduced maintenance.
