Morgan Asphalt of Salt Lake City, Utah, has expanded far beyond its namesake and into a full service infrastructure company that reports that its quality of customer service is rivaled only by the quality product it delivers. Founded in 1996 by Thomas Morgan, Morgan Asphalt is known throughout the industry for its ability to install complicated underground utilities and lay a smooth surface, all while maintaining a tight and efficient schedule.
Morgan's employees are its greatest asset, according to its founder, and many have been with the company from the beginning. There are more than 100 during the peak paving season, comprising of four mainline paving crews, one mill crew, six grading crews, four excavation crews and three utility crews.
Brice Butler, the company's operations manager, noted that he started as a transport driver and worked his way up. He has been there for nearly 20 years now.
Morgan Asphalt's relationship with National Attachments began in 2008 when it purchased a 30CP class NYE pulverizer.
"It was an awesome, awesome pulverizer," Butler said. "We used it until the fall of last year and didn't have any problems with it. We decided to upgrade the track hoe, so we bought a different brand, which was the worst mistake we ever made, and we ended up going right back to National Attachments."
Butler said he heard good things about the other company, and they were pleasant to work with, so he ordered the new machine.
"When I got the machine and attached it to my track hoe, it lasted five working days and it broke right in half," he said. "The welds were sub-par, they grind the rust off the pipe and they welded it together. I called them to let them know what was going on, and they said they would give me a price on the repair of it. I'm going — you're going to charge me to fix it? I paid a local company to put it back together. When I purchased it, I also purchased a quick coupler from the same company. I think it lasted about two weeks. It was just one thing after another. We tried to talk to the company to see if they'd work with us, and one day they hung up on me four times in a row. They wouldn't even talk. That was one of the worst mistakes I've ever made. I didn't purchase from another company because of National Attachments. I was just thinking I was going to save money, and it just cost me a lot of money in the long run, which was a bad thing."
A Great Experience
Butler returned to National to buy a new XCP4 Series pulverizer for a 345 excavator, and had great results.
"Brice was so pleased with the quality, performance, and durability of his first NYE Concrete pulverizer that when it came time to purchase another one for a larger machine, there was only one option, a Nye from National Attachments," said Gabe Guimond, vice president of demolition products.
Butler is happy that he returned to National Attachments, and won't leave the company again.
"You definitely get what you pay for, and the way to go is National Attachments," he said "It stays at my recycle plant all the time. It doesn't leave. And it's pulverizing concrete all day, and all year long. It's very productive. It's a very good tool. I'll definitely buy through them for all my pulverizers, and probably other pieces that are attachments, just because of the way they treated me and how good their products are. When I first got the pulverizer, they sent me the wrong mount. I called them, and the mount was there within two days — the right one. They were extremely apologetic, and they treated me like a king to get me the right part as soon as possible so I could get to work. I have nothing but good things to say about them."
The XCP4 is the latest in an evolving line of mechanical pulverizers. Nye mechanical pulverizers outperform hydraulic units in both primary and secondary crushing operations, according to the manufacturer. They are built entirely from extra thick quenched and tempered alloy plate, ready for years of work on the most demanding job sites. They are easy to install, silent to operate, and available in quick coupler and pin grabber compatible versions.
Morgan Asphalt is still owned by Tom Morgan, who is currently serving a mission for the LDS Church in St. Louis, Miss.
"He's one of the greatest guys I've ever met," Butler said. "He empowers his people to do their job. He does not micromanage us at all. He's more of a go get it done person, and I think that's why we do so well. While he's gone, he left five of us in charge to run his company, and we all work great as a team. It's more a family that it is anything. That's how we treat each other, and that's how Tom taught us, so that's a very good environment to work at."
