Officials Consider Restoring 27-Mile N.C. Railroad Line

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) Transportation officials are considering reopening a railroad line in southeastern North Carolina.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that officials are considering if it would be worth the investment to restore a 27-mi. (43 km) line between northern New Hanover County and southern Duplin County.

Paul Worley of the state rail division is studying the local economic impact and cost of restoring the line between Wallace and Castle Hayne.

Worley said officials also are looking at connections to military bases and industrial sites and terminals, including the Port of Wilmington.

He said state lawmakers will get a preliminary report on the idea by March 1. A final report is due in January 2015.

Officials say restoration of the line could help attract new industry to the area.
