OSHA Seeks $67,900 Fine in Roofer’s Electrocution Death

Federal officials want to levy the fine on a Pennsylvania woodworking company for the electrocution death of a roofer - and then sending another worker to finish the job three days later.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Federal officials want to fine a defunct Pennsylvania woodworking company nearly $68,000 for the electrocution death of a roofer - and then sending another worker to finish the job “under the same hazardous conditions’ three days later.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Kolek Woodshop Inc. of East Deer Township let the worker, 58-year-old Andrew Sakala, use an aluminum ladder which touched a 7,200-volt power line in September.

John Kolek, the shop’s owner, tells The Associated Press that he’s since shut down the business, not because of the accident but because he’s now 79 years old.

Kolek says the worker in question decided to use the ladder because some scaffolding wasn’t working.

He’s hoping to challenge all or some of the proposed fines.
