According to Volvo CE, the company is the oldest industrial business in the world that is still active in construction equipment.
Volvo’s history is vast, but essentially the Sweden-based manufacturer got its start in 1832 as a machine shop in Eskilstuna. Its founders were Johan Theofron Munktell, Jean (Johan) Bolinder and Carl Gerhard Bolinder — all whose names would remain in the company’s name until the mid-20th century.
AB Volvo purchased the machine manufacturer Bolinder-Munktell in 1950. By 1973, the company’s name had changed to Volvo BM AB. The name was changed again in 1995 to its current moniker, Volvo Construction Equipment, or Volvo CE. Other important milestones in the company’s history include 2001, when Volvo CE, through its equipment rental arm, Volvo Rents, began its equipment franchising initiative. In 2007, Volvo bought Ingersoll Rand for $1.3 billion. Through its dealership network, Volvo CE sells its equipment to customers in more than 200 countries.
