The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has been selected a winner in the 2002 "Associations Advance America" awards competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

ARTBA was recognized for its overall "Roadway Construction Zone Safety Program." The program includes:

o ARTBA Safety Management Manual for Highway Contractors. Developed by a task force of ARTBA highway contractors working with safety experts from CNA Insurance Company, the publication has been officially endorsed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

o "OSHA 10-Hour Training Course Exclusively for the Roadway Construction Industry." A multi-media training course available in English, which was developed by ARTBA in partnership with the National Safety Council and CNA Insurance Company and introduced to the industry in 2001.

o National and international conferences "Roadway Work Zone Safety," that bring contractors, transportation officials, site designers, law enforcement, safety representatives and educators together to discuss safety in roadway construction sites.

o National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse. This facility, an information source for roadway construction zone safety issues, is based at the Texas Transportation Institute. It was created by ARTBA in 1998 in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration. Today, it is financially supported by the ARTBA Transportation Development Foundation, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Laborers’ International Union of North America and others. The Clearinghouse handles more than 36,000 information requests annually.

ARTBA currently is developing a driver’s education module on navigating construction zones for the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is targeted at new, teen drivers.

Now in its 12th year, the "Associations Advance America" awards program recognizes associations that propel America forward with innovative projects in education, skills training, standards-setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship and community service.

"ARTBA’s program truly embodies the spirit of the "Associations Advance America" campaign, ASAE President Michael S. Olson said. "It is an honor and an inspiration to showcase this activity as an example of the many contributions associations are making to advance American society."
