The Americans for Transportation Mobility Coalition (ATM) launched a nationwide grassroots effort today to engage and mobilize local business leaders to call on Congress to pass long term surface transportation legislation.

The events will take place across fourteen cities in eleven states, and will be enhanced by ATM’s “Make Transportation Job #1” campaign, which includes advertising buys and radio tours reaching key states and districts around the country.

“Advancing long term surface transportation legislation means advancing common-sense projects that facilitate the movement of goods and services around the country and to markets around the world,” says Janet Kavinoky, vice president of the ATM Coalition. “It means job creation in the near term and economic development in the long term.”

Both the House and Senate are poised to advance bills next week, ahead of the expiration of the latest extension of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), on March 31, 2012. While there are significant differences between the packages, there is strong bipartisan momentum driving these efforts.

From February 20 through 24, while Congress is in recess and members are back in their home districts, ATM will partner with local chambers of commerce and business associations to host roundtable discussions and forums in communities around the country. The goal of the meetings is to mobilize support, maintain momentum, and pressure representatives into acting on long -term transportation legislation. The “Make Transportation Job #1” campaign, which began in Washington D.C. last week, expanded beyond the Beltway this week and runs through February 27.

The Americans for Transportation Mobility Coalition is a nationwide effort by business, labor, transportation organizations, and concerned citizens to advocate for improved and increased federal investment in the nation’s aging and overburdened transportation system.
