Construction Equipment Guide

Baldi Brothers, based in Beaumont, CA, recently completed work on an irrigation canal at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corp Base in Twentynine Palms, CA.

The base is the world’s largest marine corp base and features several specialized training facilities.

Baldi brought in its Gomaco GP-4000 four-track paver to both trim and pave the project.

Gomaco’s largest slipform paver, the GP-4000, two-track and four-track, features a versatile modular design, high-production and proven rideability results on new and reconstruction of highways, airports and city streets.

The modular frame telescopes on the left side up to 3.5 ft. (1.07 m) and modular vibrator packages provide ease in changing hydraulics for variable paving widths.

Mainline and airport, paving widths range from 12 ft. (3.7 m) to 50 ft. (15.2 m) and paving depths up to 19 in. (48.3 cm).

Gomaco’s control system features self-diagnostics for front and rear grade, cross slope, steering and smart steer controls for paving accuracy and ease of operation. Stringless technology and the IDBI are adaptable to this control system.

The GP-4000 is equipped with multiple emergency stops, track guards and other safety features. The GP-4000 is designed with a low profile engine shroud that provides excellent operator visibility over the entire paving operation.

The profile of the canal at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corp Base is 24.5 ft. (7.5 m) wide and 36 in. (91.4 cm) deep and runs through part of the Mojave desert.

A T/C-600 texture/cure machine followed behind the paver applying a spray cure.

Gomaco’s versatile texture/curing machines are equipped with crawler tracks or flotation tires and provide increased efficiency on any project where the surface of the concrete requires texturing and application of curing compound.

The T/C-Series texture/cure machines permit width adjustment from 24 ft. (7.3 m) to 56 ft. (17.1 m).

The central operator station and power supply provides hydraulic control from one location. A 76-hp (56.7 kW), four-cylinder, water-cooled Cummins diesel engine, provides ample power for any project. Operating speed is variable up to 129 fpm (39.3 mpm).

Optional power transition adjuster (PTA) hydraulically adjusts for crown height and permits on-the-go adjustments.

Curing assembly includes a 250-gal. (946 L) reservoir with hydraulically driven cure pump, filter, gauges and controls. The spray bar has nozzles spaced 12 in. (30.5 cm) apart and 18 in. (45.7 cm) above the surface of the concrete.

Texturing assembly travels transversely across the width of the concrete slab. Carriage speed is variable up to 192 fpm (58.5 mpm). Texturing wire tine member is automatically pivoted to trail at the end of each pass. Adjustable pressure on surface contact between texturing member and concrete controls depth and angle of wire tines.

Electronic over hydraulic forward and reverse steering and grade control is sensored off the same stringline as the paver. This provides ease of operation and accuracy in texturing and curing of the slab.

The canal project went smoothly for Baldi Brothers and it completed its work well ahead of the scheduled deadline.
