The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved a contract worth $49 million to improve the I-295/I-64 interchange.

English Construction Company Inc. of Lynchburg, VA, was awarded the contract to improve the I-295/I-64 interchange in western Henrico County, widen Pouncey Tract Road and construct a new flyover ramp from I-64 east to I-295 north. The flyover bridge and additional lanes will improve the flow of traffic between I-295 and Route 288. It also will improve the traffic along Pouncey Tract Road between Broad Street and Twin Hickory Lake Drive. Construction will begin in May 2006 and the anticipated completion date is spring 2009.

The project involves adding a lane to the outside of I-64 in both directions between Route 288 and Route 250. In addition, the current one-lane ramp from southbound I-295 to westbound I-64 (toward Charlottesville) will be increased to two lanes. A new, two-lane flyover ramp will carry eastbound I-64 traffic to northbound I-295. The ramp will be 1,765 ft. long and 35 ft. above I-64.

Construction on Pouncey Tract Road will take place between Twin Hickory Lake Drive and the first signal north of Broad Street. The existing two-lane bridge over I-64 will be replaced with a new, four-lane bridge. The new bridge will be 338 ft. long with a raised median, sidewalks and aluminum railing on each side.

In addition, modifications will be made to the first traffic signal north of Broad Street. Widening of Pouncey Tract Road is expected to be complete in spring 2008.

Motorists can expect nighttime lane closures starting in May along Pouncey Tract Road, I-295 and I-64. These nighttime lane closures will be in place for the duration of the project.

In addition, there will be periodic nighttime detours of I-64 traffic onto Broad Street to enable contractors to place structural steel for the new bridges and demolish two existing bridges (Pouncey Tract Road bridge and northbound I-295 bridge over I-64).
