BREAKING NEWS: Notre-Dame Cathedral on Fire Amidst Renovations

Firefighters are tackling a blaze that broke out at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 15. While the fire's cause is still under investigation, the Paris fire brigade said it could be traced to renovations that were under way, the Associated Press reported.

Images show flames engulfing the church's spire, which collapsed—its peak has been the site of a $6.8 million renovation. According to reports, the church's wooden interior is now also ablaze.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called it a "terrible fire" and encouraged those in the area to be mindful of the boundaries that fire crews set up to ensure their safety, BBC reported.

Construction first began on the iconic church in 1163, and last year, the Catholic Church in France began an appeal to raise funds to save the crumbling structure.

No deaths have been reported.
