Caltrans Awards $8.3M in Grants to Local Governments for Transportation Planning

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced Oct. 2 the release of more than $8.3 million in grants to 49 entities, including local governments, community-based organizations, and tribal governments.

“These funds can help build stronger communities in which to live, promote equity, and protect the environment,” Caltrans Director Will Kempton said.

Grants for the 2007-08 fiscal year amount to $8.3 million, and went to 62 transportation planning and transit-related activities throughout the state.

Highlights of the grants include:

• City of Oakland —$187,050 was awarded to identify traffic-calming measures and pedestrian, bicycle, and transit improvements in the Harrison-Oakland neighborhood. This corridor is a dense residential and commercial area.

• Riverside County — $85,500 was awarded to the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians to create a tribal transportation plan to accommodate population increase and development to achieve social equity, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, and safety.

• Sacramento — $56,000 was awarded to the Sacramento Area Council of Governments to prepare businesses, transportation management organizations, and public agencies in the region to respond to travel disruptions during and immediately after a major emergency.

• San Diego — $50,000 was awarded to the San Diego Association of Governments and San Diego State University for a collaborative project to staff and train interns in transit planning at local agencies.
