CIAP Construction Camps Introduce Students to Industry

It is the third year for the CIAP Summer Construction Camps, and the overall objective of introducing younger students to all the exciting opportunities that exist in the world of construction still remains top priority.

CIAP continues to partner with the participating community colleges across the state. The dates, times and locations vary, but the theme of hands-on activities and exploration is carried through each camp. The students are busy working on projects and programs from the moment the camp begins.

And, as in past years, the highlight of each of the camps, for both students and the instructors, are the field trips and guest presenters from the Operating Engineers, the NJCCT and the Construction Laborers Locals 172 and 472. These three trades have been supporting these summer camps right from the start. What other camp offers the opportunity to test-drive a backhoe, operate high tech lasers or build a toolbox from scratch? These are just a few of the experiences that thrill and fascinate the campers. The Ocean and Gloucester camps had several returning students who wished to once again try their hand at “driving” the equipment.

“We need to reach the inquisitive minds of these younger students. They are now beginning to identify that the subjects that they like in school may lead to what they want to do when they ’grow up.’ This is the perfect time to introduce career opportunities for them to consider and think about even though they are years away from graduation,” commented Lee Pisauro, educational representative of CIAP of NJ. “Also, very importantly, these camps provide industry information for them to take home and share with their parents.”

Camps were held at Essex County College, Gloucester County College, Ocean County College and the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill. There are already discussions for adding new locations during the 2007 summer camp season.
