Local North Carolina news affiliate WNCN is reporting that construction workers discovered what appears to be a cannon near the Federal Courthouse on Water Street in downtown Wilmington last week.
The artifact was discovered around 4 p.m. while crews were working on the Riverfront Park renovation project. The construction worker who found the cannon said it was about 6 to 8 feet below the surface.
Wilmington police, including the the department's bomb squad, were called to the scene to determine if the cannon was safe.
According to Cathryn Lindsay with the WPD, bomb squad officials believe the cannon isn't loaded and poses no threat to the public, but will leave that determination up to the archaeologists from Fort Fisher.
