Members of the Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. (GUCA) have finished work on Camp Misty Mountain of the Girl Scout Council of northwest Georgia.

Camp Misty Mountain is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northwest Georgia, surrounded by national forest with a 100-acre lake. With more than 900 acres of fields and forest, the property is a secluded yet accessible mountain getaway for Girl Scouts.

Although the council has had the property for approximately 30 years, in the past 10 years the camp has been developed to accommodate year-round camping and a summer resident camp that supports, motivates and reassures young girls that they can succeed at camp and in life.

Due to intense use, a site that was never properly graded and the lack of any runoff control measures, the horse paddock at Camp Misty Mountain had developed runoff problems, threatening to contaminate Lake Marvin. Girl Scouts of America and Prime Engineering Inc., in conjunction with Willow Construction Inc. developed a grading and drainage plan to alleviate this problem.

Willow took the lead in managing the project, coordinating the efforts of several GUCA volunteer members. The total cost of the completed project that covered more than 10 acres (4 ha) was $32,000.

The following GUCA member companies participated by donating time, labor and materials to the project:

• EFS Inc. installed 900 ft. (274 m) of silt and tree save fence.

• Southeast Culvert, provided 360 ft. (110 m) of 18-in. (45.7 cm) high-density polyethylene pipe at reduced cost.

• Southeastern Clearing Systems LLC cleared the 10 acre site.

• Strack Inc. supplied 24 ft. (7.3 m) of 30-in. (76 cm) reinforced concrete pipe.

• Willow Construction Inc. provided grading and storm drain installation.

Everett Construction Inc. of Rome and Cal-Mar Services of White also made significant contributions of both time and material.
