Cummins Inc.has unveiled the next-generation X12 Series engine, anticipating the productivity and performance needs of the North American Class 8 truck market. With the highest power-to-weight ratio of any engine in the 10-to-16-liter class, the X12 enables regional-haul, intracity delivery and vocational trucks to operate at maximum payload with lower fuel consumption and more responsive driving than previously experienced from an engine of this size.
The 12-liter engine is rated up to 475 hp, and provides up to 1700 lb-ft peak torque at 1000 rpm, which remains available to over 1400 rpm, reducing the need for gear shifting and giving better low-speed lugging on grades.
The innovative architecture of the X12 results in a remarkably low engine weight - just 2,050 lb - enabled by a sculptured block design, which allows unnecessary mass to be removed, but retains high rigidity. Substantial weight savings are also achieved by the use of high-strength composite materials for the oil pan and valve cover.
"During the design process for the X12, we evaluated every opportunity to reduce size and lower weight, but importantly, we achieved this with no compromise to structural strength, so that our next-generation 12-liter comes with all the durability associated with a Cummins Heavy-Duty engine," commented Jim Fier, Cummins Vice President - Engineering, speaking at the X12 unveiling which took place at the Transportation Research Center (TRC) in Ohio.
"We are really excited about how the next-generation X12 will complement our engine portfolio and provide to our OEM partners a compact yet capable engine - an ideal fit for shorter-nose conventional cabs - while very low weight makes the engine a great power solution for sleeper trucks sensitive to front axle weight," said Fier.
A major installation and weight advantage is also realized with the new Single ModuleTM aftertreatment, designed by Cummins Emission Solutions to be 40 percent lighter and up to 60 percent smaller than current aftertreatment designs.
Customer-focused innovation resulted in a Single Cam In Head (SCIH) design with roller valvetrain and high-efficiency intake ports to minimize complexity. The latest version of Cummins VGT® Turbocharger incorporates reliability and durability enhancements, to boost transient response, and combines with an integrated low-weight engine brake, to provide strong engine braking at lower rpm. The next-generation X12 Series will be in full production in 2018, following the completion of an extensive field-test program.
Today's ISX12 diesel and natural gas engines continue to gain preference in North America with a proven record of reliability and durability. The engines continue to benefit from ongoing fuel-efficiency improvements, and will be compliant with Phase 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) and fuel-efficiency standards, to be fully implemented in 2017. The ISX12 G engine will continue as the heavy-duty platform for natural gas.
The next-generation X12 will be built at the Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant alongside the latest X15 Efficiency Series and X15 Performance Series, as part of an expanded X family occupying a 350 hp-to-605 hp rating range, to offer the widest heavy-duty choice in the industry. The X12 Series will offer a range of application-adapted ratings for regional-haul, vocational, refuse, motorcoach and fire trucks spanning the 350 hp-to-475 hp range. For specific restricted applications, a higher 500-hp rating will also be available.
Similar to the X15, the X12 will incorporate Cummins ADEPT,TM SmartCoastTM and Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) functions for further fuel savings. Useful options for vocational and emergency truck applications include Front Power Take-Off (FEPTO), Rear Power Take-Off drive (REPTO) and a side-mounted drive.
The X12 will be ready from the factory to take advantage of advanced solutions using Cummins Connected CalibrationsTM family of applications, which will empower fleets to improve productivity when connected to a capable telematics system without a visit to the service bay. And with solutions using Cummins Connected TuningTM applications, the X12 Series can be adjusted and optimized over the air, for improved costs of operation - without a trip to the service bay.
A significant contribution to improving truck uptime is realized with Connected DiagnosticsTM enabled through the engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the telematics system. Connected Diagnostics automatically processes fault code data, sending instant notifications from Cummins detailing probable cause, and providing recommended actions. The expert advice delivered by email, app or web portal enables the fleet manager to make informed decisions about continuing truck operations and when to schedule a service visit for the most convenient time, maximizing uptime.
