De Sal Excavating, located in Zeeland, Mich., was challenged with installing an 8.5 ft. (2.6 m) O.D. lift station in the middle of an active parking lot and driveway at the Michigan Turkey Producers plant in Wyoming, Mich. Fortunately, they turned to Pro-Tec Equipment, a producer of trench shoring and shielding equipment, to assist them with this particular challenge.

De Sal needed to install the lift station at a depth of over 20 ft. (6 m) with water present at 12 ft. (3.6 m). So, with the assistance of a Pro-Tec Equipment factory-trained job site consultant, Rob Coppens, and a Komatsu PC 300, they installed a 20 ft. deep by 11 ft. wide (inside) by 19 ft. long (inside) (6 by 3 by 5.8 m) double slide rail system.

“In this situation,” noted Derek Stewart of De Sal Excavating, “there would have been no way to get that lift station set without the slide rail system.”

The entire system was delivered to the job site late on a Monday afternoon, completely installed to its final depth on Tuesday and ready for the lift station to be set on Wednesday morning of the same week. The Pro-Tec slide rail shoring system is installed from the top down and removed from the bottom up, minimizing the size of excavations, soil disturbances and restoration time and cost. The installation is done with low vibration, providing soil support for excavations, adjacent structures and existing utilities.

“Besides operating in an active parking lot or driveway, the biggest challenged we faced on the job was the presence of water at about 12 feet deep,” noted Rob Coppens, Pro-Tec Equipment’s factory-trained slide rail job site consultant. “Fortunately, the crew knew that water was going to be present so we were able to just push on through.”

Removal of the system was done over the course of the next couple days, allowing De Sal to fully install the lift station and gradually remove the slide rail system while keeping the required compaction rating of the soil.

“I really like the slide rail system,” said Stewart. “ When it is applicable, I will push to use it.”
