From clearing land for initial site development, to excavating for utilities, to stabilizing foundations for pavement installations, the ability to tailor an excavator’s power to its projects can increase productivity and reduce fuel consumption for contractors. Upgrades in power and performance to the Doosan DX225LC-3 and the DX255LC-3 excavators, combined with interim Tier IV (iTIV) emission compliance updates, are designed to help customers work more efficiently, according to the manufacturer.
Improvements to the machines include new selectable power modes and work modes that provide operators with the convenience of being able to customize their machine’s power delivery for specific tasks, in addition to adjusting the hydraulic flow to match attachment functions. A new electronic fan clutch reduces fuel consumption and noise levels, while providing cooling system efficiency improvements on the machines.
Power
The DX225LC-3 and DX255LC-3 are each powered by a 6-cylinder Doosan DL06K water-cooled diesel engine that has been designed for use with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) system, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The engines in this configuration are optimized to reduce nitrogen oxides and articulate matter to comply with iTIV emission regulations. The turbocharged 167 hp (124 kW) engine on the DX225LC-3 and the 185 hp (138 kW) engine on the DX255LC-3 feature a high-pressure common-rail design with direct fuel injection and electronic control.
The mid-sized Doosan DX225LC-3 and DX255LC-3 crawler excavators feature an electronic power optimizing system (EPOS), which provides optimum power and fuel efficiency via four power modes, auto-idle and machine diagnostics. Operators can work more effectively with multiple work modes, easy-to-read display monitors and precise control levers. The new Power + mode provides improved performance and faster workgroup speeds for heavy duty work, according to the manufacturer.
Performance
Four work modes — digging, breaker, shear and the new lifting mode — allow operators to get maximum efficiency and fuel economy in specific applications. In the lifting mode, the increased pump torque, low engine rpms and automatic power boost provide extra muscle when lifting materials like pipe or concrete barriers.
The 167 hp DX225LC-3 has an operating weight of 49,604 lbs. (22,500 kg) with standard boom, arm and 1.20 cu. yd. (.9 cu m) bucket. Bucket breakout force is 33,510 lbs., while arm breakout force is 23,810 lbs. Maximum digging reach is 31 ft. 10 in. (9.7 m) at ground level and maximum digging depth is 21 ft. 7 in. (6.5 m). Dump height is 22 ft. 5 in. (6.8 m).
The 185 hp DX255LC-3 has an operating weight of 56,659 lbs. (25,700 kg) with standard boom, arm and 1.43 cu. yd. (1 cu m) bucket. Bucket breakout force is 39,463 lbs., while arm breakout force is 28,219 lbs. Maximum digging reach is 32 ft. 10 in. (10 m) at ground level and maximum digging depth is 22 ft. 4 in. (6.8 m). Dump height is 23 ft. 1 in. (7 m).
Options
The DX225LC-3 and DX255LC-3 feature a new intelligent floating boom option that allows the boom of the excavator to “float” up or down. With this feature, the operator can focus more on the task while decreasing the machine workload and increasing efficiency. The float mode lets the boom move freely up and down without hydraulic flow, while the breaker mode allows the boom to freely move down, only without hydraulic flow. A temporary reset button provides the ability to momentarily disengage the float modes, permitting hydraulic flow to activate the boom. Also offered is an air compressor, which is ideal for operators in remote and dusty locations to clean the cab.
A new straight travel option streamlines the travel and transport of the machines. This feature is ideal for the straight forward-and-backward travel common in trenching applications, as it provides a single foot pedal in the right front corner of the cab floor that operates both tracks.
Comfort
Doosan continues to focus on operator comfort with further enhancements to the roll-over protective structure (ROPS) cabin. Both a seat-height lever and a tilting function for the seat cushion were added to the seat to allow the operator to find an optimum seating position. The cabin mounting mechanism has been improved with a thickened dampening plate, and an internal coil spring has been added to reduce cabin vibration 20 percent, allowing operators to work longer days with less fatigue.
The spacious cab features an adjustable suspension seat with headrest and adjustable armrest. Joystick controls telescope up and down based on operator preference. A multi-function color LCD monitor panel displays a variety of machine information, including operation history, flow rate control and filter/oil information.
Easy-to-operate joystick controls make precise machine movements easy, while supplementary buttons are available for control of additional equipment, such as grabs, crushers and grippers. In addition, the sound-suppressed cab keeps machine noise as low as possible to reduce operator fatigue.
Uptime
Long maintenance intervals and easy access to service points increase machine uptime and productivity. Examples include centralized grease inlets, wide side access doors for cleaning radiators and oil coolers, boom pivot bushings with greasing intervals of 250 hours, bucket pins with greasing intervals of 50 hours and a large-capacity engine air precleaner that removes more than 99 percent of airborne particles and extends filter cartridge service life.
