Construction Equipment Guide

In two of the largest moves made in 2008 by Dawes Specialized Transport Inc. (DST) of Dawes Crane and Rigging Inc., the company helped Vision Logistics move 10 giant kiln shells, three riding rings and a massive P & H mining shovel to the Port of Milwaukee. DST used a fleet of heavy specialized equipment, including its 100- and 200-ton (90 and 181 t) capacity lowboy trailer configurations.

The kiln sections and the 18-ft.-wide (5.5 m) rings, headed for the Seadrift Coke Plant in Seadrift, Texas, weigh between 75,000 and 125,000 lbs. (34,000 and 56,700 kg) each. The largest kiln section weighed 125,000 lbs. and measured 58 ft. (17.7 m) long by 15.1 ft. (4.6 m) in diameter. One of the largest kilns ever hauled by DST, it was transported to the port to be loaded onto two river hopper barges for the trip to Texas.

The mining shovel, bound for the Port of St. Petersburg, Russia, was in excess of 50 truckloads; the largest piece for the shovel was the revolving frame, weighing 214,000 lbs. (97,070 kg) and measuring 32 ft. (9.8 m) long by 15.1 ft. wide and 11.3 ft. (3.4 m) high. When fully assembled, the shovel weighs 2.9 million lbs. (1.3 million kg) and has a bucket capacity of 115 tons (104 t) — the largest mining shovel that P & H produces and that DST has ever moved.

DST was able to expedite the move of the shovel to the port in one week so the ship could leave the Great Lakes before the winter freeze.

DST offers on-time nationwide trucking as Dawes’ 48-state authority trucking division. DST has the tractors, trailers, drivers, and planners to provide efficient and on-time deliveries. DST manages its own specialized fleet of hauling equipment and its own staff of heavy-haul drivers.

DST Inc. and Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental Inc. are members of the ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. Family of Companies.
