FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) The city has hired a ballpark design company to help with its new $30 million downtown baseball stadium.
The company, HOK Sport based in Kansas City, Mo., has worked on several major projects, including Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission approved the $1.7 million contract with HOK Sport for the design of the new ballpark, which will serve as a centerpiece to the Harrison Square development.
The $120 million Harrison Square project will include a Courtyard by Marriott, a combined retail-condominium building and the ballpark.
Greg Leatherman, Fort Wayne deputy director of development, said the contract with HOK Sport will include all work designing the stadium, including some work that has already been completed.
The Fort Wayne Wizards hope to play in the new ballpark in 2009, so construction on the project is likely to begin before all of the design work is finished.
The new 5,000-seat baseball stadium would replace the existing 6,300-seat Memorial Stadium, which was completed in 1993 near Memorial Coliseum on the city’s north side.
