Founder of Messick’s Merville M. ’Mert’ Messick Dies at Age 90

From the time of his retirement until age 90, Mr. Messick mowed all of the grass on the Messick Farm Equipment Property.

Merville M. “Mert” Messick, 90, of Lancaster, Pa., formerly of Elizabethtown, Pa., died May 24, 2013. Mr. Messick was the son of the late Jacob and Sarah (Long) Messick. He was the husband of the late Betty (Kaylor) Messick, who died in 2010.

Mr. Messick was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. In 1953 he founded Messick Farm Equipment in Elizabethtown. He was a past president of the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club and the Pennsylvania Dealers Association and served on the Board of Trustees of Brethren Village, Lancaster.

Mr. Messick enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and golf. From the time of retirement until age 90, he mowed all of the grass on the Messick Farm Equipment property. He also sang in the Brethren Village Chorus.

He is survived by two sons: Robert M., husband of Marie Messick and Kenneth L., husband of Marian Messick, both of Elizabethtown; six grandchildren: Scott (Christa) Messick, Bryan (Bonnie) Messick, Anita (Sean) Vanek, Neil (Kristin) Messick, Kevin (Janelle) Messick, and Lucas (Elizabeth) Messick; five great grandchildren; siblings: Mahlon (Helen) Messick, Mildred Risser, Miriam Aldinger and Mylin (Doris) Messick.

He was preceded in death by siblings: Marie Myers, Marvin Messick, Miller Messick, Mattilee Dagen, Milferd Messick, Melvin Messick, Margaret Zell and Marlin Messick.
