GUCA Awards Six Scholarships During 2008 Fall Quarterly Meeting in Atlanta

Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. (GUCA) hosted its 2008 Fall Quarterly Meeting and Trade Show on Nov. 6, at the Westin Buckhead, Atlanta, Ga.

More than 175 GUCA members attended this year’s fall quarterly meeting with 29 trade show tables hosted by GUCA Associate Members.

The trade show featured exhibitors representing a variety of different types of suppliers and vendors in the utility construction industry. Those participating in the trade show included: Atlantic Precast Concrete Inc.; Bairstow Lifting Products; Brown, Nelms & Co.; Ditch Witch of Georgia; Dykes Materials; Ferguson Waterworks; Georgia Southern University; Godwin Pumps; H & H Insurance Services Inc.; Hanson Pipe & Precast; ITT Flygt Corporation; Jack Nadel Inc.; Mabey Bridge & Shore Inc.; Maxwell Systems Inc.; Metro Koring & Supply Inc.; Nextran Truck Center; Rain For Rent; Southern Polytechnic State University; Spotswood Associates; Storm Trap LLC; Sunbelt Rentals Pump & Power Services; The Blue Book; Tindall Corporation; Trench Shoring Services; United Safety Associates Inc.; Verizon Wireless; and, Watkins Erosion Control.

GUCA also awarded scholarships to six construction management students at four-year higher education institutions in Georgia.

Junior and senior level students attending four-year colleges and majoring in construction or engineering degree programs are eligible to apply for scholarships from GUCA. The association has awarded more than $116,000 in scholarships since 1995.

“The GUCA scholarship opportunities help open the door for students to complete their educational goals and hopefully gear their construction-related education to the much-needed utility construction industry. The utility construction industry continues to be a vibrant force in Georgia’s economy and our members are offering competitive salary and benefit packages in an effort to make the industry a viable choice for graduating college students,” said Bradley Newcomer, GUCA director of Safety and Education.

Students received scholarships totaling $8,000. Three recipients from Southern Polytechnic State University include Jake Kelsoe, a junior majoring in construction management; Drew Anderson, a senior majoring in construction management; and Marie Benavidez, a senior majoring in construction management. Three recipients form Georgia Southern University include Jesse Bentley, a senior majoring in construction management; Jeremy Daniel, a senior majoring in construction management; and Jacob Reichel, a senior majoring in construction management.

Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University was this year’s quarterly meeting keynote speaker. Dhawan, a world renowned speaker on the economy, has received several awards for his forecasting accuracy, including most accurate GDP forecast by Bloomberg News in 2005. Appearing often in the media, Dhawan is frequently seen on CNN and CNBC, and is quoted in national and regional publications, including USA Today, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, among others.

The next quarterly meeting event will be held on March 19, 2009, at the Freight Depot, Atlanta, Ga.
