Hoss Equipment Springs Into Nevada With Sparks Facility

Hoss Equipment Company (HECo) of Irving, TX, an independent dealer of used equipment for the heavy highway, construction and mining markets, is open for business at its new facility in Sparks, NV. The company buys, sells, leases and offers limited rentals of primarily articulated haul trucks, with a mix of dozers, motorgraders and large shovels. Hoss currently operates a fleet of more than 100 pieces of equipment at this new location.

Spurred by a great deal of business with the mines throughout the Elko-Sparks Crescent, along the northern border of Nevada, Hoss expanded its operations into Nevada. Hoss was buying used equipment on the West Coast, shipping it back to Irving, TX, refurbishing it and then reselling it, many times having to ship it right back to the west coast.

“Our pricing had to reflect the significant extra shipping costs,” said Gregg Hoss, company founder and chairman. “Our motivation became one of how can we make the most economic sense out of it for both our customers and ourselves. The solution was to find a centrally-located site out in the heart of the Western states where we could build the facilities we needed to save our customers and ourselves the unnecessary extra shipping costs and downtime,” added Hoss.

The new facility in Sparks, NV, is 25 mi. from the Reno-Tahoe Airport off I-80.

“I looked at a map of the Western U.S. and determined that Reno-Sparks is about as central as possible,” said Grant Hoss, who has done business in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. “The I-80 location is very nearly a true hub of the major infrastructure in the western half of our country; that’s primarily why we chose it.

“Suffice it to say that the relationship between Hoss of Nevada and Hoss Equipment Company seamlessly creates the lowest overhead and shipping costs to pass along to any customer or to absorb when we move our own inventory,” added Hoss.

The almost 700-acre site straddles Interstate-80, a transcontinental major artery in the national highway infrastructure. Hoss Equipment Co. is leasing the first 35 acres with the intention of building a facility modeled after the Irving, TX, operation. The plans are in the engineering and architectural stages.

The HECo staff in Sparks, NV, currently operates out of a temporary 5,000 sq. ft. mobile office building.

“We are anticipating market growth in our niche and we are carefully anticipating growth in the same way we did with our Irving facilities. We need to allow for whatever the major original equipment manufacturers [OEMs] foresee, design, engineer and build; we have to be ready to service our customers’ needs,” said Grant Hoss. “Gregg started HECo out of a trailer on a couple of acres near where we built the present Irving site,” added Hoss.

The Hoss service operation is closed to outside business. “When you look at the brands of larger equipment that are desired in these top end niches, there are very few dealers who handle them,” said Gregg Hoss. “We work closely with the territorial OEM dealerships and reserve our extensive facilities just for our own equipment. We are very good customers to them for parts, rebuilt components and rebuilt-to-OEM-spec custom rebuild equipment.”

Hoss Equipment Company’s corporate headquarters is more than 16 acres in Irving, TX, adjacent to the DFW International Airport. The facility has a 22-bay, closed service operation with specialized welding, numerous shops, and a sandblasting and painting facility. Hoss recently refurbished, sandblasted and then repainted a Cat 994 wheel loader, which fit easily within the sandblasting and painting shop. The shop also has the kind of room needed to simultaneously repaint a pair of Cat 789 articulated dump trucks, without their beds.
